Parametric Uncertainty in Intra-Herd Foot-and-Mouth Disease Epidemiological Models

چکیده

Introduction The rapid transmission and poor control policy response during recent Foot-and-Mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks have underscored the need for better decision support tools. At the foundation of these decision support tools are the epidemiological models that are parameterized with the data generated from pathogenesis studies of the FMD virus that contain contact transmission data. These values being used to parameterize the model, contrary to assumption, contain a significant amount of uncertainty, which propagates throughout the model affecting output. To understand how parametric uncertainty might affect output, a variety of disease transmission parameters were generated from contact transmission data and parameterized to an intra-herd model.

Factors associated with within-herd transmission of serotype A foot-and-mouth disease virus in cattle, during the 2001 outbreak in Argentina: a protective effect of vaccination.

Argentina suffered an extensive foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) epidemic between July 2000 and January 2002, 3 months after obtaining the official FMD-free without vaccination status conferred by the World Organization for Animal Health. This is one of the largest FMD epidemics controlled by implementation of a systematic mass vaccination campaign in an FMD-free country. In 2000, 124 herds were re...

Parameter Values for Epidemiological Models of Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Swine

In the event of a foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) incursion, response strategies are required to control, contain, and eradicate the pathogen as efficiently as possible. Infectious disease simulation models are widely used tools that mimic disease dispersion in a population and that can be useful in the design and support of prevention and mitigation activities. However, there are often gaps in ev...

Failure of vaccination to prevent outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease.

Outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease persist in dairy cattle herds in Saudi Arabia despite revaccination at intervals of 4-6 months. Vaccine trials provide data on antibody responses following vaccination. Using this information we developed a mathematical model of the decay of protective antibodies with which we estimated the fraction of susceptible animals at a given time after vaccination. Th...

Understanding foot-and-mouth disease virus transmission biology: identification of the indicators of infectiousness

The control of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) outbreaks in non-endemic countries relies on the rapid detection and removal of infected animals. In this paper we use the observed relationship between the onset of clinical signs and direct contact transmission of FMDV to identify predictors for the onset of clinical signs and identify possible approaches to preclinical screening in the field...

The impact of within-herd genetic variation upon inferred transmission trees for foot-and-mouth disease virus.

Full-genome sequences have been used to monitor the fine-scale dynamics of epidemics caused by RNA viruses. However, the ability of this approach to confidently reconstruct transmission trees is limited by the knowledge of the genetic diversity of viruses that exist within different epidemiological units. In order to address this question, this study investigated the variability of 45 foot-and-...
